On 2 September 2026, hundreds of students, activists, and community members gathered at UNC-Chapel Hill to protest the G20 Innovation Ministerial — an AI-focused international forum held at the Carolina Inn as part of the US G20 presidency agenda. The ministerial brought together U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Elon Musk (remote). The protest was the largest organized civil society counter-event to any AI-focused G20 gathering in the United States.
Protesters assembled at the Old Well on UNC's campus before marching toward the Carolina Inn down Cameron Avenue. Organizers built noise disruption into the march — using kazoos, pots, pans, and rubber chickens — designed to evoke the sound of the large AI data centers protesters opposed. Chants included "Hey hey, ho ho, Sam Altman has got to go," "Up up with education, down down with AI nation," and "Stop data centers now!" Signs read "G20 innovation for the public, not the billionaires."
The protest remained entirely peaceful. Police erected metal fences about an hour into the action to block off portions of the road; no arrests were made.
The primary organizer was Sunrise UNC, the University of North Carolina chapter of the Sunrise Movement. Supporting organizations included Indivisible Orange County, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, UNC Students for Justice in Palestine, UNC NAACP, and the Campus Y. Retired UNC faculty joined the march alongside first-year students.
Demonstrators called for: stronger AI regulation, opposition to the deployment of AI-powered Flock security cameras on the UNC campus, data center accountability on energy and water usage, and greater transparency from the tech industry about AI's societal impacts. Sunrise UNC press correspondent Isabelle Lynn said she was excited by the turnout. Laura Love of Indivisible Orange County noted the coalition showed "how wide-ranging the dissent is."
The protest came three weeks after the OpenAI DC lobbying office occupation — the highest-profile action of the "Dump Big Tech" August 2026 wave — and continued the pattern of direct-action pressure on AI companies and their government ties into September. UNC officially stated it was not affiliated with or sponsoring the G20 ministerial.
