Lightspeed Grants was a rapid-grant programme launched in June 2023 by Lightcone Infrastructure — the organisation that operates LessWrong and the Alignment Forum — with Jaan Tallinn (co-founder of Skype and Kazaa, also the primary donor behind the Survival and Flourishing Fund) as the primary funder. The programme offered $5 million in its inaugural round and aimed to move faster than existing grant vehicles, with decisions within 60 days (14 days for "venture grants") — to reach projects that the slower cycles of the Long-Term Future Fund or the Survival and Flourishing Fund might miss.

Focus and mechanics

The programme prioritised four areas: reducing existential risk from advanced AI; preventing the development or spread of novel biological pathogens; improving reasoning among global decision-makers; and uncovering crucial considerations about humanity's long-term future. Applications outside these areas were also welcomed. Fiscal sponsorship for recipients lacking charitable status was provided by Hack Club Bank.

Approximately five evaluators — selected for reasoning ability and networks relevant to the programme's focus areas, in collaboration with the funders — assessed applications using a graphical tool specifying funding preferences across projects. A coordinated allocation algorithm distributed funds in a way designed to prevent double-funding while maximising funder preferences.
