PauseAI London

PauseAI London is the London-anchored chapter of PauseAI UK, the United Kingdom branch of the international AI-safety movement calling for a coordinated pause on frontier general-AI training. The chapter meets regularly in central London and serves as the day-to-day organizing unit for most of PauseAI's UK street activity, which is concentrated on the King's Cross cluster where Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Meta have their UK offices. As PauseAI UK is one of the three national chapters with paid staff (alongside the U.S. and France), the London chapter functions as the venue for that UK staff's public-facing work rather than as a fully separate volunteer chapter; in practice "PauseAI London" and "PauseAI UK" are used somewhat interchangeably, with the London label foregrounded when describing the city's recurring meet-ups and the UK label when describing national campaigns.

Activities

The chapter runs four kinds of work from its London base:

• Regular social meetups in central London — for example the PauseAI London Social held at the Fox & Anchor pub on Charterhouse Street in the Barbican, with 21 attendees recorded — hosted by Joseph Miller and used to debrief recent protests, plan upcoming campaigns, and onboard newcomers.
• Letter-writing nights organized around outreach to UK parliamentarians and other policymakers.
• Direct action outside the London offices of frontier AI labs — primarily Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Meta — in the King's Cross AI cluster.
• Talks, workshops, book launches, and campaign-planning meetings that connect London-based AI researchers, students, and adjacent communities to the movement's organizing infrastructure.

Leadership

Day-to-day chapter leadership sits with PauseAI UK's two paid staff. UK Director Joseph Miller — an Oxford PhD student researching mechanistic interpretability when profiled at the February 2026 march — co-organizes and hosts most London events. UK Deputy Director Matilda da Rui co-organizes alongside Miller and was identified as deputy director and co-organizer of the June 2025 DeepMind protest. Earlier London protest coordination — including the first DeepMind protest in May 2023 — was run by London-based volunteer Alistair Stewart before PauseAI UK was professionalized with paid staff.

DeepMind protests

The chapter's most visible public output is its sustained protest presence outside Google DeepMind's London headquarters at 2 Canal Reach in King's Cross. Three actions anchor the arc.

• 19-22 May 2023 — first DeepMind protest. A small four-day picket at the DeepMind office and the simultaneous EAG London conference, coordinated by Alistair Stewart with an attendance target of "up to 30 people." This was PauseAI's first London action and one of the movement's first protests anywhere.
• 30 June 2025 — Gemini 2.5 Pro safety-commitment protest. PauseAI's largest protest to date at the time, focused on Google's failure to publish a safety report for Gemini 2.5 Pro despite signing the 2024 Frontier AI Safety Commitments at the AI Seoul Summit. The action featured a mock courtroom scene "trying" DeepMind for breach of its safety pledge; MP Iqbal Mohamed joined the protest. PauseAI described the day as "the largest AI safety protest of all time as far as we know."
• 28 February 2026 — King's Cross march. Over 300 marchers walked from OpenAI's London office through King's Cross to Google and Meta, ending at a Bloomsbury church hall for networking. The march was co-convened with Pull the Plug, a UK group focused on present-day AI harms and democratic oversight, and Assemble, which advocates citizens' assemblies on AI; this was the first time PauseAI's London cadence merged with a broader anti-AI coalition. Joseph Miller and Stuart Russell were the named speakers. The MIT Technology Review's on-the-ground account described "a couple of hundred" marchers spanning PhD students, chemistry researchers, finance workers, and older activists, with slogans including "Pull the plug! Pull the plug! Stop the slop!" and "Demis the Menace."

The April 2026 attack on Sam Altman's San Francisco residence and the subsequent press scrutiny of PauseAI — addressed in the parent organization's statement — fell outside the London chapter's activity, which has remained peaceful and publicly visible throughout.

Place in the movement

PauseAI London is the corpus's first entity capturing the on-the-ground unit behind PauseAI's UK protest cadence, and one of the corpus's first London entities in the AI-safety / pause area of the movement. Its distinctive contribution within the global PauseAI federation is the combination of a paid-staff UK operation with a London geography that puts every major frontier AI lab's UK office inside a short walking radius of the King's Cross AI cluster — a venue advantage no other PauseAI chapter has. The chapter also illustrates a structural pattern worth tracking elsewhere in the corpus: a city-level chapter so geographically dominant inside its national chapter that the two labels collapse together in practice, even where the public-facing chapter page maintains a city-level identity.
