João Lucas Duim is the founder and director of impactRIO, which he describes as the first AI-safety community group in Brazil; he established the group in July 2023 at Fundação Getulio Vargas in Rio de Janeiro and has since directed three structured fellowship cohorts — alignment, advanced alignment, and governance — reaching 26 completions as of mid-2024. He co-founded LANAIS (Latin American Network for AI Safety) in 2025, a regional coordination network connecting researchers, students, and organisers across Latin America.
