Leo Hyams is co-founder and Executive Director of AI Safety South Africa (AISSA), the Cape Town-based AI-safety capacity-building organization he established with Benjamin Sturgeon in 2023. He authored the September 2025 announcement of the Cooperative AI Research Fellowship on the EA Forum — the three-month in-person research program AISSA co-organized with the Cooperative AI Foundation, the UCT AI Initiative, and PrincInt. Alongside his AISSA role, Hyams has served as a lead organizer for the Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa, the continent-wide annual machine-learning conference, and co-facilitated the AI safety workshop at its 2024 edition alongside Benjamin Sturgeon.
