Anthropologist and media scholar; Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research (since 2012), Faculty in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University (with affiliations in Anthropology and Gender Studies), and Faculty Associate at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. PhD in Communication, University of California, San Diego (2004). Named 2020 MacArthur Fellow for her investigation of "how labor, identity, and human rights are transformed by the digital economy."

Co-author with Siddharth Suri of Ghost Work: How to Stop Silicon Valley from Building a New Global Underclass (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2019) — the foundational text of the platform-labor and AI supply chain register, winner of the 2019 McGannon Center Book Prize at Fordham University and named a Financial Times 2019 Critic's Pick.
