Max Tegmark is Professor of Physics at MIT (joined 2004) and Faculty Advisor to MIT AI Alignment (MAIA) and a mentor at the Cambridge Boston Alignment Initiative (CBAI). He co-founded the Future of Life Institute (FLI) in 2014 alongside Jaan Tallinn, Anthony Aguirre, and Viktoriya Krakovna — an organisation focused on reducing global catastrophic risks from advanced technologies including AI. He is the author of two New York Times bestsellers: Our Mathematical Universe (2014) and Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (2017). Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in AI in 2023. His current research focuses on mechanistic interpretability and guaranteed-safe AI via formal verification.
