President of the Signal Foundation (September 2022–; board member since 2020) and co-founder and former Faculty Director of the AI Now Institute at NYU, launched alongside Kate Crawford in November 2017 as the first university research institute dedicated to the social implications of AI. During thirteen years at Google (2006–July 2019) she founded Google's Open Research Group and co-founded M-Lab, the globally distributed open internet-measurement platform; in April 2018 she was a core organiser of the employee petition against Project Maven — signed by more than 3,100 Google workers — that successfully ended the company's Pentagon drone-AI contract, and later that year co-organised the November 2018 Google Walkout For Real Change. She served as senior advisor on artificial intelligence to the FTC chair from November 2021 to September 2022.
