UK public-engagement and participation specialist working at the intersection of AI / data governance and democratic deliberation. Patel is a co-founder of the public-engagement and participation work at the Ada Lovelace Institute, where she served as Associate Director (Engagement) and worked between 2014 and 2022 on the body of practice — citizen juries, deliberative councils, participatory inquiries — that has become the Institute's distinctive contribution to UK AI governance. While at the Institute she lead-authored the Participatory Data Stewardship framework (2021) and the earlier Beyond Face Value, Rethinking Data and The Data Divide reports, and sat on the UK Statistics Authority's Centre for Applied Data Ethics independent Advisory Committee.
After leaving the Institute she founded Elgon Social Research, an independent research consultancy on technology, data and AI ethics, public engagement and participation, and equity, where she is Research Director. She is also currently the Policy and Public Engagement Lead at the ESRC Digital Good Network at the University of Sheffield, where she sits on the team behind the 2024-25 Participatory and Inclusive Data Stewardship landscape review — co-produced with the Ada Lovelace Institute and the Liverpool City Region Civic Data Cooperative — that explicitly builds on her 2021 Ada Lovelace framework. Alongside the academic work she holds advisory affiliations with the Bank of England's Central Bank Digital Currency Engagement Forum, the Finance Innovation Lab (Senior Fellow), the Wellcome Trust, and the Scottish Government on COVID-19 public engagement, and was a delivery partner on Ada Lovelace's UKRI-funded Public Voices in AI collaboration (April 2024-March 2025) representing Elgon Social Research.

Patel's own personal site — primary disclosure that she co-founded the Ada Lovelace Institute's public-engagement work, lists her authored Ada Lovelace reports (*Beyond Face Value*, *Rethinking Data*, *The Data Divide*, *Participatory Data Stewardship*), and names her current roles as Research Director and Founder of Elgon Social Research, member of the Bank of England's Central Bank Digital Currency Engagement Forum, Senior Fellow at the Finance Innovation Lab, and advisor to the Wellcome Trust and the Scottish Government on COVID-19 public engagement
ESRC Digital Good Network bio — names her as "Policy and Public Engagement Lead for the ESRC Digital Good Network" and as Director of Elgon Social Research; gives her Ada Lovelace Institute tenure as "between 2014 and 2022" (the institute itself was publicly launched in 2018; the 2014 date plausibly reflects predecessor work inside the Nuffield Foundation that became the Institute)
ESRC Digital Good Network research page describing her as "Policy lead at the ESRC Digital Good Network" and a co-founder of the Ada Lovelace Institute; confirms her involvement in the 2024-25 *Participatory and Inclusive Data Stewardship* landscape review (co-produced with the Ada Lovelace Institute and the Liverpool City Region Civic Data Cooperative) that builds on her 2021 report
UK Statistics Authority Centre for Applied Data Ethics blog (authored by Patel) — names her as Associate Director (Engagement) at the Ada Lovelace Institute and member of the Centre for Applied Data Ethics independent Advisory Committee; identifies her as lead author of the Institute's *Participatory Data Stewardship* report
