On 22 July 2026, Stop the AI Race began a continuous daily occupation outside OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters at 550 Terry A Francois Blvd — a peaceful sustained presence of concerned citizens, families, and researchers, launched eleven days after the Stop the AI Race march on 11 July 2026 drew approximately 400 people. The single demand: that Sam Altman publicly commit to pursuing an international AI treaty to coordinate a halt to frontier model development.
On 18 August 2026, the occupation extended to OpenAI's New York office at 295 Lafayette St, establishing a daily presence on both coasts. The San Francisco site runs 9am–6pm weekdays; the New York site runs 8:30am–6:30pm weekdays.
The occupation represents an escalation of Stop the AI Race's direct-action approach from periodic street marches to sustained daily presence at OpenAI's offices. During the occupation's first months, over 1,000 employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind — including OpenAI's Chief Scientist — urged US government support for international mechanisms to slow frontier AI development, an outcome organizers cited as evidence that pressure on lab leadership was producing internal movement.
