Stop the AI Race march (San Francisco, 11 July 2026)

On 11 July 2026, Stop the AI Race staged what multiple outlets described as the first major AI protest in US history, drawing several hundred people through San Francisco's Mission Bay and SoMa districts past the offices of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. The organizing coalition comprised thirteen organizations including PauseAI, Stop AI, QuitGPT, Evitable, AI Action, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, and Food and Water Watch.

Route and schedule

The march ran noon to 3pm: rally and speeches at OpenAI's Mission Bay headquarters (1455 3rd St), then a walk south to a second speech stop at Anthropic's SoMa offices (500 Howard St), then east to Google DeepMind's Rincon Park location (345 Spear St), closing with an after-party at Rincon Park.

Demand and organizers

The march carried a single conditional-pause demand: every CEO of a major AI lab should publicly commit to pausing the development of more powerful AI if every other major lab credibly does the same. The structure was designed to name and test the competitive-pressure claim that individual labs cannot slow unilaterally.

Lead organizer Michaël Trazzi — a filmmaker and former AI safety researcher who staged a hunger strike outside Google DeepMind's London office in September 2025 and organized a smaller Stop the AI Race action in San Francisco in March 2026 — framed the demand around AI lab CEOs who had publicly warned about the existential risks of their own technology while refusing to slow without coordination. David Krueger, AI professor at the University of Montreal and founder of the nonprofit Evitable, joined as co-organizer and speaker.

Context

Organizers cited Anthropic's 2026 decision to drop its Responsible Scaling Policy — which had committed the company to pause development if its AI became too dangerous — as a proximate cause for the action's timing and its centering of Anthropic alongside OpenAI and Google as named targets. The march is the most-attended AI protest on record in the United States to that date. The comparable London action five months earlier, the March Against the Machines, drew 300–500 participants.
